Transfiguration of our Lord Parish Church is the only Roman Catholic Church in Cavinti, Laguna.

transfiguration of our lord parish church cavinti laguna
Like the other churches in the Philippines, it has a colonial baroque architectural design.

transfiguration of our lord parish church cavinti laguna
It has a bell tower attached to the church building.

And, right next to it is the convent and a small garden giving it a refreshing look.

Although currently in it's forminable adobe structure, it wasn't originally so.  It was originally made of lighter materials and was just rebuilt on 1621.  It was partially destroyed during the Chinese uprising on 1639.  It was rebuilt but once again crumbled down during the Earthquakes of 1824.  It also suffered major cracked during the earthquakes of 1880 and 1937.

The interiors are simple and plain with white walls.

It's very clean-looking and solemn too.

You can see that there are Twin Bicycles (Php 500) and Mountain Bikes (Php 200) for rent on its drive way.  We went pass it because we were excited to try the other activities.

We noticed that the resort is very Korean-friendly.  They even have their own registration area.

There are Korean banners everywhere and the restaurants serve Korean dishes.

After our breakfast, we decided to go and try golf.

Golf
caliraya mountain lake resort
As a novice, I really can't tell the difference of one hole from another.

But, that didn't seem to matter since the first step is to learn how to swing.  My friend Resley did a pretty good job.  I had many attempts before I managed to swing a good one.

It's a scenic view to see both the pool and the Caliraya Lake.

Bonfire
caliraya mountain lake resort
There's a bonfire area near a mini forest and the lake.  It was really windy and cool during our visit although it was still noon.  So, the bonfire at night would really be a nice warming activity for any group.  Bonfire rate is Php 700.  I'm told you can also set up a tent here for functions and sleepovers for a fee.

Pasyal Boat
caliraya mountain lake resort
My friend Clarissa and I headed over to the boat house to wear our life vest and wait for the boat.

caliraya mountain lake resort
The Pasyal Boat (Small) is for 2,500 php.

caliraya mountain lake resort
Of course, we didn't want just an ordinary pasyal along the Caliraya Lake.  So my friends Martin and Althea, showcased their flexibility.

And,our boatman is their number 1 fan...

Marina
caliraya mountain lake resort
40 meter Slide & Drop
The Marina is a fun-filled area.  It has several courses such as Slide & Drop, Cobweb, Wall Climb Slide, Tire Challenge, Cable Balance, Karate Kid, Military Crawl, Tarzan Swing, Log Crossing and Palo Sebo.  I think all of them are cool especially the Military Crawl because you have to swim underwater.

Zipline and Hanging Bridge

The Zipline and Hanging Bridge (Php 150) are packaged together because you have to go back by the bridge.

Paddle Boat

A whole new experience for my Clarrisa and I is the Duck Feeding.  The very friendly staff taught us how to call them.  It was really fun, funny and yet, very effective.  As you can see, the ducks came swimming towards us!

caliraya mountain lake resort
We got 6 bowls of duck feed priced at Php 500.  To our amazement, the ducks peck gentle so it tickles.

Lumot Lakea.k.a Sierra Lake is a man-made reservoir just like it's bigger brother, Lake Carilaya.

lumot lake
It was created to complement Lumot Dam which is an enbankment dam sourcing it's water from Lumot River.

lumot lake
This is smaller and less developed so all activities here are free.  You can see both foreign and local fish here.  Sometimes, water sports competitions are also held here.

Layag-Layag Island: 500 Peso Budget Batangas Beach Camping Destination (Brgy. Payaya Nasugbu Batangas)

$

0
Before one of my best friends leave for Europe, my friends and I were determined to go on an out of town trip.  They had a lot of ideas for out-of-the-country and out-of-town trips but they were all too expensive for me (being a full-time student).  Lucky for me, my friends were very understanding so they agreed to let me organize the trip so I can pick any destination and activity that I want.  I was locked-in on Batangas as our ideal destination.  It is near Manila and budget-friendly too.  I was considering other destinations like Fortune Island when one of us came across Layag-Layag Island.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
Prior to our trip, we tried to search for Layag-Layag Island on Google Maps and even on our GPS Systems but we couldn't find it.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
Can you see Hamilo Coast from here?
And the reason for that is that this place isn't exactly Layag-Layag Island but a portion of Brgy. Papaya in Nasugbu Batangas.  We went here by a small fishing boat.  But, you can also reach here by hiking.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
The real Layag-Layag Island is that little hill right there.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
The water here is so clear that you could actually see schools of fishes swimming near the shore line.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
That Obscure-Shaped Rock is a Home of the Black Fish.  Spot it?
However, it is very rocky because this isn't really a public beach.  This is privately owned by the Sy Family who use this area as a sand resource.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
This is our sunset view.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
Not bad right?  You can see the sun slowly going down and there's a lighthouse there too.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
You can occasionally see ferry ships pass by from Manila or Bataan.  This is also the point where the sea water enters the cove.  So you can see waves crashing and intersecting with one another.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
We enjoyed the sea breeze and the beautiful sound of the waves.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
One foot steps sink in the sand so it doesn't hurt although not powdery like in Boracay.  We were told by May the sands would again be replenished and it would again be cleaner and less rocky as part of the natural cycle.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
This is our morning view.  There's no view of the sunrise but you can see the romantic hues in the horizon.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
We also noticed that the tide is lower in the morning.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
But, the sea water got back up very quickly.

layag layag island nasugbu batangas
They were also lots of holes by the beach in the morning.  We spotted small crabs and hermit crab steps on the sands.

Overall, we Travel Tripsters are so glad to have discovered Layag-Layag Island.  We're also lucky enough to be the only group (just 4 of us) camping at the site during our overnight stay.   I'll be posting more about this so stay tuned.

Casita Room

If you think the huts are for decoration, well, it isn't.

Inside, it's actually very functional.  There's a bed and a television.

Ultimate Preparation Guide for Mount Pulag (Read Before You Climb)

$
0
0
My cousins decided to climb Mount Pulag last May 29-30 2015.  A week before the actual climb, one of my cousins and her significant other had to back out due to work so my younger sister and I were invited to take their slots.  My younger sister climbed last January 30, 2015 and they did not reach the summit.   She was traumatized by the experience because she almost turned into a popsicle and she saw nothing!  Well, that didn't hinder me from still pursuing the climb together with my cousins and some friends.

Being poorly prepared because I took the slot only a week before the actual climb.  Don't let that happen to you!  Read this Ultimate Preparation Guide for Mount Pulag before you climb!

Budget
There are two options for you.  And, the main consideration is your budget!

Above The Clouds Tour Group Meet (0500-0700) at Caltex Station near Victory Liner Station

Option 1 involves booking yourself in a tour:
  • Typical tour inclusions is only for:
    • Jeepney (Baguio-Bokod-Ranger-Bokod-Baguio) - pain in the ass literally ;)
    • DENR fees (Certificate of conquest)
    • Local guide fees (Licensed tour guide from the Pulag National Park)
    • Group equipment (stove, cookset, lanterns; we do the cooking!) - Free 1 Lunch
    • Facilitators
    • Travel Insurance
    • Souvenir Shirt

  • Tour rates - You can take ours as a sample as all 11 of us were booked in at Adventures Above the Clouds or ClubTravelNOW.org.  Our tour rate is:
    • 4,088 php - from Manila
    • 3,188 php - from Baguio (Our base expense for all 11 of us is 3,188 x 11 = 35,068 php)
  • Additional fees:
    • 1,000 - ride to and from Manila to or from Baguio (own carpool divided our toll and gas expenses)
  • Pros and Cons with Our Mount Pulag Tour Package with Adventures Above the Clouds or ClubTravelNOW.org
    • Pros:
      • Site is very information on the itinerary, what to bring and some faqs
      • We had sight seeing stops at the:
Ambuklao Dam

The Spillway
        •  Ambuklao Dam and The Spillway in Brgy. Ambuklao, Bokod, Benguet
452 meters long (It's longer than it looks)

129 meters high (It's also highest than it looks)
        • Jangjang Hanging Bridge (aka Jangjang-Balengasay Hanging Bridge) in Bokod, Benguet - reach the end so you can see that there is the Jangjang Eatery

Pinkan Jo Translate to Hi Jo!
I highly recommend the Fried Chicken against all the other dishes! We even made another stop back for them! ;) All meals are priced at 50 php and 10 php for rice
View at the Back of Pinkan Jo Snack House
Toilet is free and clean

        • Pinkan Jo Eatery - Our official stop for brunch, snack and drink replenishment for toilet stop.   It also has a stunning view.
        • They took note of food restrictions
        • July-October is blocked because it is the rainy season - at least they don't give false hopes for this period
    • Cons:
      • Sizes of the T-Shirts that were distributed were not as we indicated.
      • We were misinformed regarding the camp sites and we had to camp at the Ranger Station.  We were given a notice that "starting last February 2015, Mt. Pulag park management decided to close camping sites (Camp 2 and 3) in order to help Mt. Pulag recover from all the years/months of intense human activity due to the spike in tourism." but when we got to camp 2 and 3, there were lots of campers there.
      • I think our tour is expensive.  Although initially you think it's cheap but because we had to add for the bus from manila, full board meals and tent (amounting to around 1,400 addition per person so actual total is 4,588 when you can have an all-in for around 3,350-3,800 if you do your research)
      • I expected a more informative tour.  Our tour guide didn't talk at all about Mount Pulag during our trek.
      • We didn't stop by Daclan Sulfur Spring/Badekbek Sulfur Spring.
Option 2 involves DIY:
  • Transportation from Baguio to Ranger Station
    • 1. 8,000 php - Rent monster jeep for 18 persons (ETA 3-4 Hours)
    • 2. Individual Public Transport
      • 120 php/person - van or public bus from Dangwa  terminal by the old slaughter house in Baguio to Kabayan (ask to be dropped off at Ambangeg near DENR station) (ETA 2 hours)
      • 250 php Habal-habal to Ranger Station
    • 225 php/person Orientation fee at DENR Ambangeg
    • 30 php cultural fee
    • 500 php/guide for 5 persons + 100 additional person - if you can choose a guide get one that's good with cameras.  I've observe the other group guides like that =)
    • Had we gone this DIY route (8,000 or 8,140 + 2,160 + 1,100 + 330 php = 11,730 php) we would have saved up to 23,478 php!
  • Other optional expenses:
    • bus trip going to and from Baguio
    • 500 php - To hire a porter for up to 15 kilos.
    • 15-50 php - For hot powdered drinks and snacks from the stores at the ranger station
    • 5 php - For clean toilet or shower
    • 350 php - Full board meals (2 Lunch +1 Light Dinner + 1 Light Breakfast) - from above the clouds
    • 300 php - 1 tent (good for 2 or 3 persons - kiddie size!)
    • 200 - sleeping bags at the ranger station

  • Ambuklao Dam and The Spillway

  • Bajungbong falls
  • Daclan Sulfur Spring/Badekbek Sulfur Spring
What to Bring:
  • Most of my gears are borrowed from my cousin that couldn't go.  I'm very lucky as she is very prepared with intensive research and shopping involved.  To guide you in layering your clothes, check here http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Pulag/forecasts/2922
  • Also take note of the season:
    • High probability of dry weather: summer (March - May)
    • High probability of wet weather: rainy season (June - October) - I also discourage climbing in this season because it will be very moist and muddy.
    • Coldest months: December-February - Most of us are not used to the coolness so I really discourage you from taking this climb.  Remember my sisters traumatic experience?  They went up on a stormy and freezing time and ended up wasting money.
  • 1. Main clothing
    • 1.1 1 pair of ordinary clothing going up to the Ranger Station
    • 1.2 1 pair of layered clothing for hiking up to the summit (Better if thermal.  It was 8 Degree Celsius at the Ranger Station when we began to hike up)  - Because I'm used to the hot tropical weather I wanted to be sure I won't freeze so I wore excessive layers even though it was summer.  It's normal to sweat out during a hike so I'd personally prefer it to freezing!
My clothes with all the layers! Bonnet, Winter Scarf, Columbia Rain Jacket, Ultrathin Lightweight Polyester Sweater, Uniqlo Ultalight Trim Down Jacket, Black Uniqlo Heatech Sweater, T-Shirt,Body Music Jogging Pants and Reebok Rubber Shoes

But, I had to trim down as we got up and the sun got up.

Removed bonnet, winter scarf, black Uniqlo Heatech Sweater and zipped open everything as daybreak came
As I hiked down, I trimmed everything down into Black Uniqlo Heatech Sweater, T-Shirt, T-Shirt, Body Music Jogging Pants and Reebok Rubber Shoes (and it was still hot!)

    • 1.3 1 pair after hiking (you can take a bath for a fee at the Ranger Station) - Ordinary clothes are fine because it is warm when the sun is up.
    • 2. Fleece/down/shell jacket  - If you can, choose the warmest but lightest jacket.  I brought a Uniqlo Ultra light weight down jacket and it's light weight didn't bother when I had to trim down.
    • 3. Raingear - You'll need this even during summer as it may drizzle or rain.  We bought our raingear from Wyler Enterprises.  Some of us opted for the 1 piece raincoat and some chose the 2-piece rain jacket and pants.  The 2-piece rain jacket and pants are better because they don't get caught on the twigs causing tear.  They also don't balloon from the strong during strong winds.   Above all, they were moisture-free for a cheap price!  They are also light weight and easy to dry.  We just hanged them dry outside our tents.   If you have more funds, you can go for Columbia or Northface jackets.  I was using wearing a Columbia jacket which was light and waterproof and it was efficient in keeping the moisture away.
    • 4. Trekking/jogging pants - As long as it can protect you from thorns and twigs, it's good enough.  I used my old Body Music nylon jogging pants.  It was light weight and easily dries.  If you have a high budget you can invest on waterproof or thermal ones.  If you have a 2-piece rain jacket and pants, I don't see why you need waterproof ones.
    • 5. Extra thermal socks - I wore double layer of thermal socks but it doesn't seem as useful even if it is thermal because of the moisture.  But, since it's very light and easy to bring better have more than less right?
    • 6. Gloves - We brought construction worker gloves which didn't work. The gloves should be leather winter gloves because you don't need the extra layer.  You need to keep your hands dry.
    • 7. Bonnet/Head Gear/Scarf/Malong - I wore a knitted bonnet and winter knitted scarf.
    • 8. Dry bags - The entire time including the hike up, I brought my 5L dry bag that contains all my gadgets especially my non-weather-sealed camera.
    • 9. Hiking/camping bag or rucksack - I used a 36L Columbia hiking bag for women.  Most of us carried a bag around 40L.  Any brand with a back brace and a rain cover will suffice.  It is also useful if it has strap belts on the side so you can strap in your long earth mats or sleeping bag that won't fit your bag.  If you don't have straps, you can use carabiner hooks.
    • 10. Sleeping Bag + Optional Emergency Thermal Blanket - Each sleeping bag has a comfortable or optimal temperature and limit temperature.  I used a Navigator South sleeping bag with a thermal limit of 0 degrees.  It was thick and warm but moisture still penetrated.  Moisture or damp proof ones are very expensive.  My friend used a 150 php sleeping bag from Basekamp which I noticed was a lot thinner. In case your sleeping bag isn't warm enough, you can supplement your sleeping bag with a Waterproof Emergency Thermal Blanket which you can buy for less than 100 php.  There are also sleeping bags for rent for 200 php at the Ranger Station.
    • 11. Earth/Camping/Sleeping mat/pad -  This is very cheap to buy (around 150 php) and very light to carry around so it's ideal to bring.  The insulated or aluminum foil ones are betteras they provide additional warmth.  As cheap substitutes, you can use yoga mats.  Recently, I also discovered an inflatable sleeping pad with pillow.  You'd be posh with that. =p
    • 12. Headlamp (with batteries that last around 6 hours) - Because our hands have to be free so we could climb, we opted for a LED headlight from Wyler Enterprises  instead of flashlights.
    • 13. Large Garbage Bags (at least 2 pcs.) + Garbage Clips - You can use garbage bags for your trash as they strictly implement that Leave No Trace Principle.  It is also useful to waterproof your things.
    • 14. Personal whistle (even if you're camping/hiking bag has a built-in one cause you will be leaving you're heavier load on the camp site)
    • 14. Personal meds and First Aid Kit
    • 15. Toiletries including alcohol and wet wipes - The Ranger Station has a restroom with water.  At Camp 2, there is only an open pit with a wood to step on and around you for a bit of privacy.  Better put your mask up!
    • 16. Mess kit - We used take-out disposable plastic wares and plastic utensils.  It's hassle-free as we just threw them after use and it spared us from dishwashing.
    • 17. Personal trail food - We didn't have time to stop and eat so candies and nuts were eaten along the way.
    • 18. Bottled water - You can purchase some at the Ranger Station
    • 19. Camera -  If you have a light weight tripod, you can even capture the constellations.
    • 20. Trek pole (optional) - My friend says it helped her a lot.
    • 21. Sunglasses
    • 22. Shoes with traction - You'll be passing through rocks and mud.
    • 22. Tent with rain cover - You can rent one for 300 php at the Ranger station.  The one we rented is the X2 from Basekamp (worth 2,475 if you purchased one)
    • 23. Medical certificate - There is now a medical certificate required before you take the climb because a 51-year-old tourist died of heart attack inside her tent on November 6.  Bring a printed copy of medical clearance with the contact number and license number of your medical physician who issued it. If you have any conditions, further assessments will be required - such as to the heart (Electrocardiogram or ECG, kidneys, lungs and liver.
    • 24. Oxycan (optional) - My cousin also brought an Oxycan which we passed on along if we're having difficulty in catching our breath.
Fitness Check:
If you have medical conditions , you cannot take this climb (even if you manage to get a medical certificate) because it gets cold and difficult to breathe as you go up.  As long as you can walk for long hours you'll be fine with the Ambangeg trail.  The trail is not so steep.

So that's it! You're ready for your Mt. Pulag Climb!  Will post more on the details of our climb.

An hour and half or so after our stop at Pinkan Jo Eatery, we arrived at another sign of civilization as we saw tourist items being sold.  As we walked further, we then understood that we are at the Mount Pulag DENR Registration.

mount pulag denr
Mt. Pulag is part of the National Integrated Protected Areas Programme (NIPAP) so this registration and orientation is required.  They have a study supporting this requirement as Mount Pulag has more than 500 species of plant, of which 251 are endemic to the Philippines.  A bird survey identified 77 species of which 30 are endemic to the Philippines, 13 have a highly limited distribution, and eight are globally threatened.

mount pulag denr
There were already batches already leaving as we arrived.

mount pulag denr
Inside there were more souvenirs to purchase.  Aside from here, you can also buy at the Badabac Ranger Station

mount pulag denr
We attempted to join in the orientation but the room was so full so our Above the Clouds tour group was asked to join in on the next.  The capacity is only around 120 persons at a time.  And, they accommodate around 400 a day.

mount pulag denr
We were first asked to watch a 15-minute video presentation.  After the show there's the talk and questions were entertained.

mount pulag denr
I found the boards in the orientation room more informative.  I gave me a vague picture of what to expect.

There are 4 trails to reach Mount Pulag's summit.

1. Ambangeg or Babadak Trail
mount pulag denr
Major jump-off: Ambangeg Ranger Station, Bokod, Benguet
LLA: 16°34’58?N 120°53’15?E, 2922 MASL (#3)
Days required / Hours to summit: 4-5 hours / 1-2 days
Specs: Major Climb | Difficulty 3/9 | Trail class 1-2
Trail system: Grand Cordillera Trail, Section 3
Features: Sea of Clouds | Dwarf Bamboo Slopes | Mossy Oak Forest

The  Ambangeg or Babadak Trail is the easiest trail. It's even considered a celebrity trail.  Most of those who reach the summit take this trail.  The distance from the jump off at the Babadak Ranger Station to the Mount Pulag Summit is 8 kilometers.

2. Akiki Trail
mount pulag denr
Major jump-off: Brgy. Doacan, Kabayan (Akiki)
LLA: 16°34’58″N 120°53’15″E, 2922 MASL
Hours to summit / Days required: 10-11 hours / 2-4 days
Specs: Major Climb, Difficulty 7/9 | Trail class 3

The Akiki Trail is much steeper for more experienced hikers.  Yes, you have to cross a river.  Camp 3 will be your camp site.

3. Tawangan or Tabego Trail
mount pulag denr
Major jump-off: Sitio Labang, Brgy. Tawangan, Kabayan
LLA: 16°34’58″N 120°53’15″E, 2922 MASL
Hours to summit / Days required: 10-11 hours / 3 days
Specs: Major Climb, Difficulty 6/9 | Trail class 3

The Tawangan or Tabego Trail passes through the northern ridge of Mt. Pulag over its mossy forests.  It is colder to climb through this trail.  It's also known as the bloody trail because of the presence of blood leeches called Limatik.

4. Lusod or Ambaguio or Mt. Ugo-Pulag Trail
Major jump-off: Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya
LLA: 16°34’58″N 120°53’15″E, 2922 MASL
Hours to summit / Days required: 30-40 hours / 6 days
Specs: Major Climb, Difficulty 8/9 | Trail class 4
Features: Pine forests | Mossy forests | Villages | Hanging bridges | Lakes | Waterfalls

The Lusod or Ambaguio or Mt. Ugo-Pulag Trail is 20 kilometers in length.  It ends in either at:
  • Camp 3 junction of Mt. Pulag where the Tawangan trail meets
  • Camp 2as you reach the foot of peak 3
Aside from the trails, one that really stuck to me is their Leave No Trace Principle.  Apart from the experience, we should do our part to preserve Mount Pulag.  Aside from our grumbling stomach because of our long wait, we were excited to embark on the first ever hike of our lives!

Our last stop in Cavinti is the Japanese Garden along Caliraya Lake .  I had the assumption that this is just a small park.

As we were trying to find a parking slot, I couldn't help but be surprised that the parking was full and there were so many cars parked.

japanese garden cavinti laguna
The Japanese Garden is a memorial park built by the Japanese government in the 1970s in order to commemorate the Japanese soldiers who died during the Second World War which is why you can find the Yamashita Shrine there.

Passing through the convenience stores, we headed on towards the bridge and a huge staircase.  When we got up, we were all amazed at how big the area was! It is roughly 11 hectares in total!

Everything was so green.  Family, lover and friends can easily find a picnic spot.

And, if you continued on, you'll reach a beautiful place with stunning view of CalirayaLake with the mountain and clouds as backdrop.

If you're in Cavinti Laguna, definitely include Japanese Garden on your destination list.  Bring a camera, some food and spend some relaxing time here.

Camping at the Babadak Ranger Station: Sea of Clouds

From the DENR Office for registration and orientation, we reached our destination - Babadak Ranger Station (a.k.a Ambangeg Ranger Station) in less than an hour.

mount pulag ranger station

Major jump-off: Ambangeg Ranger Station, Bokod, Benguet
LLA: 16°34’58?N 120°53’15?E, 2922 MASL (#3)
Days required / Hours to summit: 4-5 hours / 1-2 days
Specs: Major Climb | Difficulty 3/9 | Trail class 1-2
Trail system: Grand Cordillera Trail, Section 3
Features: Sea of Clouds | Dwarf Bamboo Slopes | Mossy Oak Forest

For those who will take the Ambangeg Trail, this is the major jump of point.   For us in the Above the Clouds Tour group, it also means our camping site as we were given this notice prior to the trip "starting last February 2015, Mt. Pulag park management decided to close camping sites (Camp 2 and 3) in order to help Mt. Pulag recover from all the years/months of intense human activity due to the spike in tourism." I have yet to certify this content because when we reach Camp 1 and Camp 2, they were a lot of campers there.  Camp 3 is for the campers who will take the Akiki Trail.

Hello Carabao!
fter our bags were unloaded from the jeep, many from the group began to set up their tents.  From our group, Matt and Andrew were also setting up their tent.  The rest of us are puzzled.  Silently, I was thinking "Here?  Really?  Beside this carabao and his carabao poo?".  Fortunately, my cousin Angelo and King King voluntarily went up to hike a bit to search for a better alternative.  A few minutes later, they called to tell us to go up because they found a good spot.  By this time, many have set up their tents.  Matt and Andrew were already testing the comforts of their tents.  Since all of us wanted to camp elsewhere, they had to ask the staffs to transfer their tents to the new spot as well.  Before we left, we witnessed the carabao attack one of the tents so they had to move.

mount pulag ranger station
After our firm insistence to camp elsewhere, our tour guides agreed provided that we also hike back down for our dinner.  We agreed.  We then hiked on our chosen camp site which involved crossing this little wooden bridge.

mount pulag ranger station

When we arrived, there was already another tour group camping at the site.  See the simple tent on the right with a orange canvass?  That's their tour guide cooking their meals.

mount pulag ranger station
While waiting for our rented tents, our camp site became foggy and it drizzled.  We brought out Raingears (2-pieces and 1 piece poncho)  and covered our stuff with garbage bags to protect them from the rain and moisture.

mount pulag ranger station
Unfortunately, my friend Steph and I were the last to have our tent put up so we were invited by these guys to have some cover.  Too bad I forgot to get the name of their tour group.  They were really nice.  On Day 2, they even offered us some Hot Sopas which we had to decline because we have our own meals.

mount pulag ranger station
The orange tent is a tent for 3.  The rest of the tents are a tent for 2.
Because it was drizzling and we were soaked, everyone decided to take a nap as soon as our tents were pitched.  When we woke up, the fog and drizzle has already cleared.

mount pulag ranger station
The back of our camp site has a stunning view of an ocean of clouds and fog overlooking the green fields.

mount pulag ranger station

The coolness was so comforting.  And, the air was so fresh.  I wish I could wake up to this every morning of my life.

mount pulag ranger station
We were surrounded by tall green grass, pine trees and the sea of clouds rolling over the Cordillera Mountains.

mount pulag ranger station
After our pictorial sessions, the clouds slowly disappeared.

mount pulag ranger station
We decided to hike down to the  Babadak Ranger Station and see what they have there.

mount pulag ranger station
Mt. Pulag Da-Guhan Store became our official tambayan store for hot drinks, cigarette breaks and rest room.

mount pulag ranger station
Instant coffee has never tasted so good!  It warmed us up from the cool weather.

mount pulag ranger station

There were other stores around the area too.  You can buy meals, coffee or rice wine.  You can also rent tents, sleeping bag, stove and cookset.

mount pulag ranger station
Everyone has their own favorite store.

mount pulag ranger station
And, their preferred pay rest rooms and shower rooms.

mount pulag ranger station
Friendly respectful native kids!
Some even opted to just camp and set their tents outside houses at the Ranger Station.

mount pulag ranger station
At night, we only have the full moon to light upon us.  We didn't have a starry view like those in the upper camps.  We went down for dinner with the aid of our flash lights and head lamps.  Matt led the group down.  But, Steph and I went down a bit later.  We got a little lost finding our way down.  Good thing some guys camping there pointed us to the right direction.

mount pulag ranger station

It was my first time to be inside a tent.  I discovered that I have a bit of a claustrophobia.  I had to breath out of the camp tent once in a while.  I also found it too cramp to sleep on.  In the middle of the night, my stomach also grumbled so I ate some Nova Jalapeño inside my tent.  To my surprise, my friend Steph woke up from the smell haha! =p  When I got out of the tent, I was surprised to see that they are now more tents at our sight.  I guess some from our group also transferred they during the day.  I didn't get to sleep anymore since call time is nearing.

Pros for Camping a the Babadak Ranger Station
  • Easy food and drink replenishment
  • Clean pay restrooms and shower room
  • Availability of equipment rental and assistance in set up
  • Sea of clouds view
  • Comfortable and manageable temperature
Cons for Camping a the Babadak Ranger Station
  • Not entirely in one with nature
  • No stars or constellation view

Mount Pulag: Hike to the Summit (Peak 3) to Watch the Sunrise

At around 12:30 am, we all woke up and prepared for the hike to the summit of Mount Pulag. We were told to bring only those essential for the hike.  We left all our other belongings on our tent.  When we met our Above the Clouds tour guide at the Babadak Ranger Station, we were assigned our tour guide Ate Levita.  We were the last group to depart from Ranger Station.

mount pulag camp 1
Ate Levita in Blue Jacket on the Left
Since we were a big group of 11, we had implemented an implied watch your buddy system. Matt led our group.  All the boys in the group were gym-fit so they were really fast.  While, the girls were on the back part.  My friend Steph couldn't keep up with the group we went on ahead as she was with Ate Levita.  There were a lot of other hikers all towards the same goal as we were so just rode witht he foot traffic.  It was quite impossible to get lost.

mount pulag camp 1

It was total darkness with only the moon and our headlamps as source of light.  Most of what I saw was only the muddy trails because that's what I'm watching out for.    By the time we reached Camp 1, we thought Steph had already given up.  Because we stayed there for a 10-minute rest and still there was no sign of her.

mt pulag camp 1

Since the boys were so eager to move on, we went on to Camp 2Camp 2 with an elevation of 2,730 MASL offers a nice view of the stars.  But, we didn't have any time to stay because we had to reach the summit before sunrise.

mt pulag camp 1
There were some campers at Camp 2 who are still cozy though.  As we left Camp 2, the guy pointed look, there are already people who reached the Summit (Peak 3).  A little later, we could already feel see daylight coming out which pressured us to go one faster.

mt pulag
Finally, we reached Peak 1 with an elevation of approximately 2,800 MASL.  The group was split into two and we lost communication with each other.  The boys went on to Peak 2.  While we, the girls, rested here.

mt pulag peak 1
Before the sun emerged, we were all glad to see Steph with Ate Levita.  After around 15 minutes of waiting, we finally saw parts of the sun revealing itself int he middle of the sea of clouds.

mt pulag peak 1
It slowly went up.  The sea of clouds withdrew further and the Cordillera mountains showed itself.

mt pulag peak 1
The coolness dissipated as the sun warmed the atmosphere.

mt pulag peak 1
We didn't know where the boys were so we had to stay put and enjoyed the view while waiting for them.

mt pulag peak 1
Beautiful right?

mt pulag peak 2
From Peak 1, we could see Peak 2 but not the Summit (Peak 3).  It only takes approximately 25 minutes from Peak 2 to Peak 3.  I kind of regret not going for the Summit but I was dead tired and hungry so I opted to save my energy for the way back.

mount pulag
Check out my muddy FILA rubber shoes.  It survived!

Some of us slept while waiting.

Steph indulged herself with her trail food Mc Do's 2 day-old burger that she brought all the way from Manila.

mount pulag
As the sun got up, we were reunited with the boys.  We asked them what was in Peak 2 and they said, there's a sign of Peak 2 and you feel like you're closer to the clouds.

mount pulag

The boys were asking Ate Levita where is the sea of clouds?  Ate Levita said it wasn't here.  If you want we can chase the sea of clouds although it might be too late...

Looking back, I would have preferred if we left earlier.  I don't see the reason why we have to wake up later, push ourselves without any stops and then be late for sunrise.  Perhaps on my next trek to Mount Pulag, I'll depart from the Ranger Station at 11 pm!

After the sunrise at the peak, we all went down to chase the sunrise under our guide Ate Levita's aid.

On the way, we asked each other if we're really up to chasing the clouds.  Everyone agreed.  My friend Steph said just go and she'll be fine behind.  Steph and Ate Levita had become pretty close at this point.  They even called each other on first name basis.  According to Steph, Ate Levita is a farmer on weekdays and Porter on weekends.  But since there is a shortage on guides, she became ours.  She is very nice.  She even volunteered to carry Steph's things for free.

With full spirits, the guys went on.

Ate Levita advised us to follow the Lusod trail.

We did as instructed.

We passed by this flag.

Until we reached a dead-end.  Too late... we were too late for the sea of clouds.  It has already passed by.  But, since we're already there.  We took a group photo with the beautiful backdrop of the Cordillera Mountains and the blue skies

We regrouped with Steph and headed our way back to Camp 2.

Heading back is when we really got to see the vegetation of Mount Pulag.

Cavinti Laguna is a town along the Sierra Mountain ranges.  It has a small total population of roughly 20,000 people.  It's main industry is agriculture.  It is currently a third class municipality.  There are a few resort, restaurants and schools in the area.  It is also equipped with electricity and connectivity.  Public transport is available in getting to and around Cavinti.  Locals are very friendly and hospitable.

The town's name came from the Tagalog expression, "kabit sa binti". The Aetas, the early dwellers of the land, performed a wedding ritual in which the groom chases his bride to the riverbank and during that time, the audience cheers by shouting "Kabit sa binti, kabit sa binti!"

The family went to Rizal to buy a sofa.  Since we were already there, we googled for a place to visit and Pinto Art Museum popped out.

We arrived at around 3pm.  We thought that it was more than enough time.  We paid for our tickets and were handed out a map.

We weren't expecting much.  We've been to other museums before... but not as big as 1.3 hectares!

    Cafe Rizal
There were more than one dining places.

There are six galleries in total.

The place is so beautiful so it's no surprise that some are taking their prenuptial shots here.  Photoshoot rate is 7,500 to 15,000 php for 5 hours.  That's really pricey but I can see why many would deem it worth it.

Mount Pinatubo Crate Lake Experience: 4x4 Ride (Part 1)

Last week, I was invited by Dermplus Sunscreen along with 4 other bloggers to embark on our Dermplus Sunventure in Mount Pinatubo.  A day hike to Mount Pinatubo is a great option fun activity to try this summer.

    mount pinatubomount pinatubo
We arrived in Brgy. Sta. Juliana, Capas, Tarlac at around 4 am.  This is the jump off point to our Mount Pinatubo hike.  You can buy walking sticks here for only 20 php.  Rubber slippers are also for sale at 50 php.

    dermplus
We were very early as the call time for our tour group with Trip Pinas is around 5:30 am.  We used the time to prepared ourselves on what to bring and put on Dermplus Sunscreen.  For our face, we used Dermplus Moisturizing Sunblock Extreme X80 With SPF 80.  And, we used Dermplus Moisturizing Sunblock Ultimate U130 With SPF 130 for the rest of our exposed body parts.

Here's What to Bring to Your Mount Pinatubo Crate Lake Trek
    1. Bottled water
    2. Trail food and/or lunch
    3. Towel
    4. Cap
    5. Sunglasses
    6. Dry bag (to protect your things when it drizzles)
    7. Sunscreen (we brought our Dermplus Suncreen for retouches)
    8. Camera
    9. Trekking sandals - very useful against the rocky terrain and river crossing
    mount pinatubo
There were many tour groups gathered in the area.  According to our tour guide, they accommodate around 1,000 of tourists in a day during weekends.  We all stayed together because our cellphones didn't have any signal so if we do get lost, it would be challenging to find each other.  While there are ATV's available for rent, I guess not one of the 1,000 rented it during our hiking day.

    mount pinatubo
We and the rest of the tour groups rode the 4x4 ride.  Each 4-wheel drive vehicle has a maximum capacity of 5 passengers and 1 tour guide.

    mount pinatubo
During the half way through the 4x4 ride, I was at the back of the pick-up truck.

    mount pinatubo
According to our tour guide, the route we're passing through is a river and the walls by the side gives us a hint of how high it goes during wet season.

    mount pinatubo

It's really difficult to imagine how it looks when there a typhoon or heavy rain because it's like a vast desert to me.

    mount pinatubo
The terrain is really rugged with some wet parts so it really puts a 4x4 vehicle to the test.  The ride was very bumpy which differentiates it from my Paoay Sand Dunes ride before

When we reached the half of out 4x4 ride, we took a quick stop.  Aeta's children are gathered here knowing it's the famous stop point.

After the 4x4 ride, we were all excited to begin our trek to Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake

    mount pinatubo crater lake

There were so many rocks and stones in various colors and shapes.  I found it relieving that I came prepared with my trekking sandals.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
    Our Tour Guide

But even if you don't have trekking sandals, not to worry because the guides will assist you in every step of the way.  They will hold your hand as you cross the river and point out where to step through the rocky trails.

Some of the streams are trickled with minerals:sulfur.

Trekkers giving them candy.  I wonder if they know how to brush their teeth.
Since the pre-Spanish era until the eruption of Mount Pinatubo on June 1991, Mount Pinatubo and its nearby areas are inhabited by the Aetas.   It's quite sad that their population now is only in thousands.  They are protected under the Indigenous People Republic Act (IPRA) of 1997.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
Happy to see an old Aeta woman.  Did you know that the average life span of an Aeta is 27 years old?

With the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, the soil became acidic making it difficult for them to farm naturally and organically as they used to.   In 1996, the Aetas received a legal recognition of their ancestral domain for Mount Pinatubo. In November 2009, the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) issued a certificate of ancestral domain title (CADT) covering Mount Pinatubo.

    Aeta kids playing

Tourism in Mount Pinatubo began in 1999 as an alternative source of income for the residents of Capas Tarlac (80% of which are Aetas) and it has won several awards for tourism projects: PATA Gold International Award 2001, Kalakbay National Award 2001 and ASEANTA International Award 2002.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
You can see stone balancing arts which are made by the Aeta kids along the trail.

    mount pinatubo crater lake

My favorite parts of the trek are the streams.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
While many would recommend trekking early to avoid the sun.  I think trekking under the sun rays has its benefits such as being able to appreciate the bright and vivid colors of nature.

So if its me, I'd rather be exposed to the sun than not to see this kind of beauty.  Besides, our Dermplus Moisturizing Sunblock Extreme X80 With SPF 80 and Dermplus Moisturizing Sunblock Ultimate U130 With SPF 13 protected us well from the uv rays of the sun.  My yellowish Chinese skin didn't even turn red.

    mount pinatubo crater lake

This sign by the rest huts brought us great relief!  Knowing how near we were to the Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake motivated us to go on further.  We also tried to beat the senior citizen pace but failed.  There are rest rooms here and my companions also bought some ice candy (20 php) and Gatorade (100 php).

    mount pinatubo crater lake

These rocky steps are beautiful but they really challenged my knees.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
We've gone all the way up and this is it...  There's a park and portalets making this area the picnic and resting nest for the trekkers.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
Hundred steps down and then up
Just a few more steps down to reach the Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake.  Coming on a Saturday, they were already hundreds ahead of us.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
When we got done, our Tripinas gave us an quick history of Mount Pinatubo.  We were also advised to stay until after noon time because it usually drizzles around 1 pm.  A lot of people set up a picnic by the lake and eat their packed lunch there.

    mount pinatubo crater lake

It took us around 2 hours to reach here and it's totally worth it!

    mount pinatubo crater lake

If you're lucky, the crater water (accumulated rainwater) changes color because of the algae.

    mount pinatubo crater lake
    Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake

After this, it's another 45 trek down where you came from. ;)

Overall, we Travel Tripsters had so much fun reaching Mount Pinatubo Crater Lake!  Definitely worth every step.  So have fun and stay sunscreen protected!

A few weeks ago, my friends and I had a spontaneous overnight getaway to Club Balai Isabel ResortClub Balai Isabel Resort is a top-notch resort in Talisay, Batangas.  It is only 2 hours away from Manila.

    club balai isabel
    Front Desk
All guests are required to drop by the Front Desk.  This is where you can get your keys, deposit your valuables and book your spa service or other activities.

Club Balai Isabel is a big compound so it has a variety of accommodations to offer.  It is estimated that their maximum capacity is around 800 people.  You can choose from so many types of rooms as well as villas and cottages that are recommended for groups.

I really appreciate that everything is well-maintained.  At night, all the trees are lighted so you can roam around leisurely.

    club balai isabel
This is our 2-storey room with 3 queen beds, 2 twin beds and 1 single bed on the first floor.  We also have a TV dresser and a cabinet.  The rest rooms both on the first and second level are very clean.  They provided a complete stash of  toiletries: lemongrass soap, shampoo with condition, toothbrush and toilet paper.  Clean towels are also provided.

    club balai isabel
We had complimentary water and coffee.  There's a mini fridge under the kitchen counter and an electric kettle.

    club balai isabel
There's a private veranda overseeing the landscape by the Terazza Cafe.

12 Things You Can Do on Your Overnight Stay
After settling in on your cozy accomodation, here are my suggestions on what you can do on your overnight stay.

    12. Take a picnic
    club balai isabel

    11. Take a stroll

Club Balai Isabel has a beautiful landscape.  There's also a butterfly sanctuary.

My favorite relaxation place is Tagong Gubat.  The place is very serene.

Coming from the city, the environment it offers is calm at peace and in tune with nature.

Taking a stroll here will surely bring you a soothing feeling.

    10. Try the obstacle course
    club balai isabel

If you're with a big group, you can challenge each other with the obstacle courses.

    9. Rent a bike

There are many bikes to choose from.  There's even a double bike.

    8. Go for a swim
    club balai isabel
Club Balai Isabel has 3 swimming pools.  This is the largest one.

    club balai isabel
The second largest is closer to the Terazza Cafe and the lake.

    8. Day dream by the lake
    club balai isabel
Although it's a lake, they placed some sand so it feels like a beach front.

    club balai isabel
Indeed, one of the strongest points of Club Balai Isabel is its Taal Lake View.

    club balai isabel
    Take time to chill here.

    club balai isabel
If weather permits, you could also catch the sunset.

    club balai isabel
This is my first time to see Taal Lake from Batangas... I usually see it from Tagaytay.

    7. Pray
spousal of mary and joseph chapel
Inside Balai Club Isabel is the Spousal of Mary and Joseph Chapel.  Many Catholic weddings have taken place here.

spousal of mary and joseph chapel
Every Sunday at 9 am, there is a mass.

    6. Play Ball
    club balai isabel
Club Balai Isabel has a Basketball Court and a Tennis Court.  They also have Billiards and Darts.

    5. Avail of their spa service (600 php/hour)
You can book a massage service to take place on your room or on their spa near the Butterfly Sanctuary.  If you want a hard pressure, I highly recommend Alice.  I was satisfied with her service.

    4. Eat
Have some Bulalo(475 php) at Terraza Cafe!

    3. Kayak by the lake

    Double Seater Kayak (300 php/hour)

Top 15 Food Pasalubongs to Buy in Davao City

    $
    0
    0
It's quite natural for us to want to share and impart our experience to others in every way we can.  One of the best ways is through pasalubongs (souveneirs).  Before I flew to Davao, I already researched on the food pasalubongs to buy.  My friends from Davao also added to my list.

    davao pasalubong

Top 15 Food Pasalubongs to Buy in Davao City
Before we go on further, I just want to remind you that Davao is famous for Durian and my taste preference is towards Durian.  If you taste buds aren't for it, just skip the Durian suggestions. =)

    15. Biscone (27 php)
Aren't there times when you want to order ice cream just for the waffle cone?  Well, Allergro Ice Cream has been making Biscone since 1952.  Biscone is your waffle cone shaped in thin round cuts.  It is sweet and buttery.  I suggest eating it with hot chocolate or coffee.  You can buy this at almost all local grocery stores in Davao CityGaisano Supermarket is one of the biggest supermarkets there with wide variety of local and imported goods.

    14. Sanny Sweets' Durian Special Hopia
The Durian Special Hopia of Sanny Sweets Bakeshop is a must try!  The durian filling is flavorful, creamy and not overly sweetened.  A pack costs 38 php.  You can find Sanny Sweets Bakeshop at 26 Tionko Avenue, Davao City.  Alternatively, you can also find it at grocery stores.

    13. Saging Republik's Gigingka
Gigingka is a combination of bibingka (rice cake) and banana (saging).  Each piece costs 80 php.  You can find Saging Republik at Tionko Ave. corner V. Mapa St., Davao City.

    12. Mindanao Industrial Confection's Mangosteen Cube and Durian Cube
Mindanao Industrial Confection's Mangosteen Cube and Durian Cube are sweet and chewy candies.  Although the fruity flavor is not rich, it's cheap price and long expiry date makes it a good option for pasalubong.  You can buy it at most grocery store in Davao City.

    11. I Love Mousse by Chef Con Yan Chocolate Cupcakes
i love mousse by chef con yan

I usually shy away from cupcakes because I find them to gloried with sugar.  But, these made to order chocolate cupcakes by I Love Mousse by Chef Con Yan is unlike any other.  I could really attest that the icing and filling is made of quality chocolate.  The chocolate flavor is rich.  And, it doesn't need sugar to mask that genuine taste.

    10. Blugre Coffee Shop's Chocolate Torte
    blugre coffee shop

Blugre Coffee Shop is not only popular for its Durian Coffee.  It's Chocolate Torte with Cream Sauce (135 php per slice) is also good.  Blugre has 9 branches in Davao City such as SM Lanang Premier, Abreeza, Gaisano Mall and SM City Davao.

    9. Osvaldo's Cakes' Pomelo Lemon Pie
The Pomelo Lemon Pie is  inspired from a Key Lime Pie.  The pie has three layers, a glistening pink gelatin top, the pomelo filling and a graham crust.  The Pomelo Lemon Pie is priced at 500 php each and you have to order a minimum of 2 pies.  Osvaldo’s Cakes is located at Ground Floor, Paseo De Legaspi, Pelayo St., Poblacion District, Davao City.  Call them at (0919) 291-5007 or (0932) 428-4070.  They are open on Mondays toSaturdays 9 am-10 pm.

    8. Lola Abong's Original Mangosteen Candy, Durian Candy and Durian Tarts
The Durian Tarts are quite expensive at 50 php for a pack of 5.  But, the family loved that the most.
Lola Abong'sOriginal Mangosteen Candy and Original Durian Candy are priced at 35-40 php per pack.  The flavor is very rich.  You could tell that the fruit component is higher than its cheaper counterparts.  It also expired quicker because of that.  These can be bought at the main store in San Miguel St, Davao City.   You can also buy these at grocery stores, pasalubong centers and market places like Bangkerohan Market (10 php more expensive than from the main store).

    7. Durian World's Durian Pastillas and Durian De Leche
Our of the Durian confections I brought home, Durian World's Durian De Leche got the most praise. Durian World's Durian Pastillas is also good.  Each pack costs 48 php.  They also have a long expiry date (almost a year) BUT don't trust it!  Consume it within a month.  You can buy them at Candies-Bakeshoppe located at Door #2 Elena Arcade Duterte St. Davao City or most grocery stores in Davao City.

    6. Cecil Bakeshoppe's Durian Roll and Durian Pie
    cecils snack inn and bakeshop
    Cecil's Bakeshoppe Malvar Branch

Cecil's Bakeshoppe has over 10 branches in Davao City and was established in 1963 at their pioneer store in 198 Anda Street Davao City with contact number (082) 227-5305.   For convenience I suggest you visit their branch at Gaisano Mall near Gaisano Supermarket.

    cecils snack inn and bakeshop
    Cecil's Main Branch
They are popular and awarded for their Durian Pie (50 php per slice).  Alternatively, you can also opt for theirDurian Roll (45 php per slice)and Durian Cake (45 php per slice).  If you don't like Durian Pie, you can opt for the Egg Pie (30 php per slice) and Chicken Pie (22 php per slice).

    5. Annie Pie's Cinamon Rolls

    annipieannipie

My Davao blogger friends Glenn and Ria (of Kusini Ni Maria) highly suggested Annipie's Cinnamon Rolls. Their products are sold in boxes which makes them ideal as pasalubongs.

    annipie
All of this list would not have been complete if not for my Glenn Santillan (cool guy in pink polo) of IloveDavao.Com

    annipie
    Annipie also serves cakes
Annipie is located at Malvar Street and Quimpo Boulevard in Davao City.  You can check their Facebook Fan page for more details.   Contact them at (082) 298-2986 and (082) 295-3799.

    annipie
I wanted to order the Assorted Four in a Box (140 php) but it turns out that they were almost out of Cinnamon Rolls.  As I didn't want to go out empty-handed, I almost settled for their Assorted Bars (140 php).

    annipie

    annipie

Good thing the staff mentioned that they still have some Ultimate Rolls in Cheese (55 php) and Espresso (55 php).  Their boxes comes with heating instructions.  The family loved these so much!  The bread is so soft and cottony.  The sauce is rich but with a right blend of sweetness.  Because of the lightly sweetened factor, we'd choose this over Cinnabon (which we all know is guilt in a single piece).

    4. Missy Bon Bon Breadshop's Original Pastel and Durian Pastel
    missy bon bon
Missy Bon Bon Breadshop originated from Cagayan De Oro and has recently opened in Davao City.  Their store in Davao City is atlower ground floor at Gaisano Mall (just in front of the Gaisano Supermarket).   You can check their website here

    missy bon bon pastel
    Original Pastel (90 php)

They have 3 kinds of Pastel: Original, Durian and Chocolate.  If you buy their 3-pack, you can have a discounted price of 250 php.  We normally don't like pastel because of the sweet yema filling.  But, my my Missy Bon Bons bread is so soft and the filling is so smooth and just lightly sweetened.

    missy bon bon pastel
    Durian Pastel (110 php/box)

The Durian Pastel has subtle Durian flavor.  Just enough for a Durian loving tongue but may be overwhelming for a non-Durian lover.  Expiration date is found at the bottom of the box.  It can last up to 3 months is you freeze it in the freezer.

    3. Lachi's Sans Rival Atbp.'s Durian Sans Rival and Durian Cheesecake
My friends from Davao wouldn't let me leave without buying or tryingLachi's famous Durian Sans Rival and Durian Cheesecake.

    2.  Fresh Pomelo
    davao pomelo

My Davao Blogger friends suggested buying fresh fruits at Bankerohan Market because it is open 24 hours (we went at around 10:30 pm) and it's a lot cheaper because this is the bagsakan (first delivery point).  There were many varieties available.  You can have a free taste before you buy.  Prices as follows: Golden Fruits Class A (110 php/kilo), Nenita (50 php/kilo), Orange (40 php/kilo) and Sweet Pomelo (30 php/kilo).  I bought a 10 kilo box of the Orange and the we consumed it for a month.  It is so much cheaper than in Manila.

    1. Fresh Durian
    davao durian
It is said that Durian is the king of the fruits.  This is my first time to see a whole fresh durian fruit.  I just discovered that it had pockets.

    davao durian
We only found one store open and selling durian during our visit.  It was Dinampo Bobong Maloy Fruit Stand.  We were charged 60 php per kilo.  50 php for the take out plastic container which they sealed using the packing tape.  I took home with me 3 of the plastic container which costs around 100 php each together with the plastic container.  As we got on the van, we realized that the smell was still evident so the next day we box a styrofoam ice box from a convenient store for 220 php and some more packing tape. So if you intend to bring home some durian, better bring a styrofoam ice box with you.  The Durian is so delicious and creamy!  The family said the Durian I bought wasn't enough.  They noted that next time I should bring home 10 packs!

Bonus: When in season, Fresh Mangosteen fruits are also affordable to buy.

So this sums up our Travel TripstersTop 15 Food Pasalubongs to Buy in Davao City.   If you have anymore to add, please leave a comment because I really intend to go back for their good and affordable food.

As much as possible, I'd suggest picking a room with a beachfront view.

    waterfront insular hotel davao
The beach is a bit rocky and seaweed layden so I don't recommend swimming in it.  But, they do allow beachline swimming from 6 am to 6 pm.  There's a reminder to take precaution as they do not have any lifeguard at duty.  I walked up 100 meters from the shore line and the water was just knee deep.  According to my friends who are locals, Samal Island is just a boat ride away from Waterfront Hotel.  So a lot of guests at Waterfront head there for superior beach experience.  In Vicente Hizon Road (street in between Jollibee and Petron Gasoline Station), you can have a boat transfer to Samal Island.  A day tour to Samal Island is only 250 php.  Unfortunately for us, our itinerary was so full that we didn't have the time to go there.

Overall, I'm very happy with my stay at Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao.  The place was relaxing, the food is good and the staffs are very courteous and quick and eager to assist.  The WiFi is fast and reliable.  The only downside is that it is roughly around 30-minutes away from the center of Davao City.
